MMAD Chenin Blanc 2022 is crafted by MMAD Vineyard in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale, from old dry-grown vines planted in deep sand and schist soils. This is a serious and compelling expression of Australian Chenin Blanc, opening with aromas of lemon oil, green apple and white peach, layered with chamomile, lanolin and a subtle flinty edge. The palate is medium bodied and tightly structured, showing intense citrus and stone fruit flavours driven by bright, chalky acidity and a pronounced mineral line. Extended time on lees adds texture and savoury depth, while the finish is long, dry and precise. The wine balances power with restraint, offering both immediacy and longevity. The 2022 vintage received 96 points from the James Halliday Wine Companion, confirming its status as a benchmark Australian Chenin Blanc. Engaging now, MMAD Chenin Blanc will reward patient cellaring over the next ten to fifteen years.

The second release of this wine sees more depth and texture, reflecting an evolution of making after winemaker Adam Wadewitz got the measure of grape and site – on Maslin sands over ironstone. There’s chew and race in equal measure, with tart golden apples, ripe Meyer lemon, cool stone fruit, sea spray and savoury elements of crushed fennel seed, white pepper and a waxy chalkiness. Integrated barrel/mlf notes round out flavour and feel, with an intriguing saline slip to the palate complementing the subtle grip and the pleasing rip of natural acid. It’s a superb wine, thrillingly refined and detailed. The upward trajectory of this project is one to watch very closely. Drink 2023 – 2033.

MMAD Vineyard is owned by a partnership of four wine
professionals, Martin Shaw, Michael Hill Smith MW, Adam Wadewitz and David LeMire MW.

The fine Maslin sands in Blewitt Springs, along with the raised elevation that exposes the vines to fresh south-westerlies from the Gulf St Vincent, give an aromatic character that is as distinctive as it is enticing.

Below the sand, and the element that drew the MMAD partners to this vineyard above all else is a layer of ironstone that adds both structure and complexity to the wine. This is rare earth, and the old vines are a precious resource and part of our viticultural history that we are grateful to have the chance to work with.Our philosophy in the vineyard is to continuously improve soil and vine health, and to promote diversity of plants, insects, and the microbiome. The vineyard pre-dates us and will outlive us, and we have a great opportunity to help it thrive during our time farming it.
