Geoff Merrill ‘Reserve’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2016, From renowned south-Australian producer Geoff Merrill, this 2016 Reserve blends 53% fruit from Coonawarra and 47% from McLaren Vale, matured for 32 months in a mix of American and French oak.

The bouquet is deep and brooding, offering dark cassis, blackberry, tobacco leaf, black olive and menthol, underpinned by subtle cedar, clove and cocoa oak-derived notes. On the palate it’s weighty yet refined: plush blackberry and plum from McLaren Vale fuse with a leaner, structured Cabernet line — the tannins are firm but elegant, acidity fresh, giving beautiful length and balance even at near a decade old. winepilot.com+1

Critics have rated it highly: 96/100 from one in-depth review, 95/100 from a major Australian critic, and 94/100 from a respected wine companion guide, all praising its seamless oak integration, texture, depth and ageing potential.

A rich, complex Cabernet that showcases Australian terroir and barrel craft, excellent now, with potential to evolve over the next 5–10 years.

About Geoff Merrill Wines

Geoff Merrill Wines is an independent, family-owned producer based in McLaren Vale, founded in 1980 by veteran Australian winemaker Geoff Merrill. With decades of experience across South Australia’s leading wine regions, Geoff Merrill established the winery with a clear focus on consistency, balance and varietal integrity, building a reputation for wines of reliability and quiet confidence.

The vineyards are drawn primarily from McLaren Vale and Coonawarra, regions well suited to producing structured, expressive Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Warm days, cooling influences and diverse soil profiles allow for full flavour development while retaining freshness and definition. Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz sit at the core of the portfolio, supported by carefully considered blends and selected white varieties where regional strength permits.

Winemaking is classic and measured, favouring traditional techniques, gentle handling and thoughtful oak maturation to support structure rather than dominate fruit. The focus remains on producing wines that age gracefully and perform consistently across vintages.

Geoff Merrill Wines are defined by their polish, balance and dependable quality. They offer confidently styled wines that reflect South Australian character while remaining accessible, food friendly and enduringly relevant at the table.
