About Clos de l’Ours Wines
Clos de l’Ours was founded in 2012 when the Brotons family chose to begin a new chapter as winegrowers in Provence Verte, near the village of Cotignac and the Gorges du Verdon. Situated at the northern edge of the Côtes de Provence appellation, the estate benefits from a distinctive microclimate shaped by altitude, surrounding forests and significant diurnal temperature variation. Hot days tempered by cool nights allow the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, preserving freshness, aromatic purity and natural balance.
The estate is a secluded 15-hectare natural enclosure, surrounded by woodland and positioned at the crossroads between the Gorges du Verdon, the Mediterranean and the Côte d’Azur. It is planted to the classic grape varieties of Provence, including Mourvèdre, Grenache, Cinsault, Rolle, Clairette and Ugni Blanc. Many of the vines average 50 years of age, with select parcels approaching 100 years, delivering concentration, complexity and a deep connection to place.
Clos de l’Ours is farmed biodynamically, with a strong emphasis on agroforestry and biodiversity. The vineyards are worked with extreme care, encouraging living soils through natural cover crops and minimal intervention, including horse-drawn ploughing to preserve soil structure. In the cellar, the same philosophy applies. Whites and rosés are vinified and aged in enamelled steel to retain freshness and precision, while reds mature naturally in a combination of large wooden vats, barrels and concrete eggs, allowing gentle oxygen exchange without overshadowing fruit or terroir.
The clay-limestone soils of Provence Verte provide an ideal foundation for these varieties, allowing the wines of Clos de l’Ours to express energy, balance and nuance rather than overt power. The resulting wines are honest, textural and quietly complex, reflecting both their landscape and the family’s long-term vision. Clos de l’Ours is a thoughtful, evolving estate, and one increasingly recognised as a serious voice within modern Provence.
