Te Whare Ra 2015 Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc (6 Bottles) Marlborough, NZ

by Wines By Cellars 0 orders

Vibrant perfume shows sweet citrus, blackcurrant, faint green herb and a waft of almond. There’s more of those things in the flavour profile, it’s surprisingly tight, though the almond-nuttiness is more pronounced here and layers in more character. Quite powerful too, though you’d also say, surprisingly, restrained. Nicely done. 94 points. – Mike Bennie, The Wine Front

This is Anna & Jason Flowerday’s inaugural Sauvignon Blanc release under their SV 5182 designation. It is the culmination of a five-year project they’ve been pursuing from their biodynamically farmed home block. The majority of the hand-picked and hand-sorted fruit is fermented in large, old French oak demi-muids, and all parcels spend a good while on fine lees post ferment. It has purity, yet with detail and fleshiness.

On the nose and palate you’ll find notes of ripe tropical notes with stone fruits, basil and lime, with a lovely line of ripe minerality and juicy acidity.

Te Whare Ra (TWR) is a small vineyard and winery located in the Marlborough sub-region of Renwick, owned by winemakers – Anna & Jason Flowerday. The 11 Ha vineyard which has predominantly loam over clay soils, is one of the oldest in Marlborough, originally planted in 1979. Yields are kept low, the vineyard is managed with a combination of organic and biodynamic practices and all the fruit is hand picked and hand-sorted.

The wines are made with minimal intervention in a small winery which has been specifically set up for small batch winemaking. TWR produces Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, an aromatic blend called Toru, Rose, Pinot Noir and Syrah. Our Cellar Door is open for wine sales and tastings from November till we start harvest in March. During this time we’re open weekdays from 11 – 4 and some weekends when the vineyard and family time permits.
