Separate from our core Dicey Bannockburn range and the Dicey single vineyard offerings, Dicey Brothers is a place to explore the outer universe.

It’s a label within our label that exists solely for fun and experimentation. Fun — firstly by us in the vineyard and then in the winery and also by you, dear reader and avid wine fan, when you slosh it around in a glass and share it with your mates.

There is a strict policy of no wine-wank with Dicey Brothers. These are not wines intended to be dissected. They are intended to create interest, some banter rather than debate and enjoyment for all those involved in the making and the drinking of them.

Amber wines are white wines made using traditional or red winemaking techniques. The wine is fermented on its skins where it picks up colour and where the name of the wine originates.

The fruit was harvested in pristine condition from our SwanSong Vineyard. We destemmed the Riesling all to a 1.5T open top fermentor, where it was warmed to kick off the ferment naturally. It was fermented reasonably cool for 21 days on its skins. When it was dry it was pressed to barrel. The wine stayed in barrel for 14 months where it underwent a natural malolactic fermentation during summer. It was hand bottled unfined and unfltered.

About Dicey Wines

Wine is about place. Dicey is a place that is a rocky pocket of Central Otago: Bannockburn. It’s not easy to make wine here. Hoar frosts. Wind. Bitter cold and crackling heat. The land is unforgiving and the wines express that struggle.

The fruit comes from three vineyards started by three families transcending two generations. James and Odelle have The Inlet. Matt and Ali belong to Black Rabbit. Their pioneering parents, Robin and Margi, own their Swansong.

Our vineyards are named Swansong, Black Rabbit, and Inlet. Swansong is steep — the vines clawing their way along terraces of eroded gravel and clay. Black Rabbit sits on ancient bedrock, vines nestled into windblown soil. Inlet’s vines drape over a terrace of deep river gravel. We coax the best out of these reluctant soils by striving for balance.

Dicey Bannockburn wines pay homage. They tell the annual story of the region and share the colours of each season. The Single Vineyard wines have an even sharper focus.
